I was playing a local club one time with a rented system (and sound man). The drums were on a riser which was kind of a treat since this club usually didn't bother, but the sound man was way into his gear and had to throw it in. (Love those guys, still doing it for the thrill.) I used to go to this club to see 311 play in the old days before they hit MTV. The drum monitors (yes plural) were old Altec "Voice of the Theater" cabinets setup as side fills on either side of the riser. This enthusiastic sound man picked them up at an auction when one of the movie theaters closed down. I remember doing sound check and was about rattled off my throne when the kick came up in the monitors; the old "Suck your guts out feeling." I thought, "Wow, I'm really going to be able to feel everthing as well as hear it this time!". Well, as the show progressed things were going well until at one moment a low end rumble started coming through the system and grew loud enough to make your bowels move! We tried to tough it out, while each holding on to our individual constitutions, we just couldn't make it through the song. Come to find out, the vibrations from these overly zealous side fills vibrated one of the microphones out of its clip, where it swung on the cord like Tarzan landing directly inside the port on our bass player's speaker cabinet. With that kind of luck, who needs Ex-Lax?
